History. Since Serampore was then a Danish colony, King Frederick VI, the King of Denmark, issued Serampore College its Royal Charter of Incorporation on 23 February 1827, in Copenhagen, Denmark (Charter, 1, Charter, 2, Charter, 3).
Founded in 1818 by British missionaries from the Baptist church, Serampore College is one of Asia’s very first institutions of modern higher education. In 1827, the university was granted the authority to confer academic degrees by the Danish King Frederik VI.

In 1818, the College was established in the Danish settlement of Serampore by the pioneer Christian missionaries, William Carey (1761-1834) Joshua Marshman (1768-1837) and William Ward (1869-1823), for the instruction of Indian youth in Christianity and the sciences.
