Jun 20, 2015 · Today I made a trip up to the historic town of Lancaster, primarily for a tour of Lancaster castle. Also know as John O’ Gaunt’s castle, it features a dark insight into the history of trials and ruthless, harsh punishments and death sentences that where handed out and took place at the castle.
Lancaster Castle is a medieval castle and former prison in Lancaster in the English county of Lancashire. Its early history is unclear, but it may have been founded in the 11th century on the site of a Roman fort overlooking a crossing of the River Lune .
Sep 11, 2020 · Prior to 1834 there as many as 20 felonies, not just murder, that typically resulted in execution. Of the 213 hangings between 1800 and 1865 only 43 (20 per cent) were for murder. Forty-four people suffered for burglary, others for highway robbery, uttering, arson and sheep and horse theft.
The court at the castle handed out more death sentences than any other in the country. The town earned the nickname ‘Hanging Town’. Executions were frequent, and, from the early 19th century took place outside the castle walls, often with crowds of more than 5000 gathering to witness the spectacle.
Lancaster Castle, built on the site of a Roman fort, has a rich and varied history dating back almost 1,000 years. Originally constructed in the 11th century, the castle has witnessed numerous events that have shaped the course of English history.
