Oct 24, 2024 · The start of the university is generally taken as 1209, when scholars from Oxford migrated to Cambridge to escape Oxford’s riots of “town and gown” (townspeople versus scholars). To avert possible hostilities between students and townspeople, only scholars under the supervision of a master were allowed to remain in Cambridge by order of Henry III.
