    • ‘Powerslave’ (1984) Iron Maiden fans may have wondered what fate could befall Eddie after he was sectioned and lobotomised for the Piece Of Mind cover.
    • ‘Somewhere In Time’ (1986) All of Derek Riggs’ Iron Maiden album covers can rightly be considered classics, but two of them are simply masterpieces.
    • ‘Live After Death’ (1985) Iron Maiden’s first official live album, Live After Death, still ranks among the greatest live albums of all time, and the group celebrated its release with one of their most lavish sleeves.
    • ‘The Number Of The Beast’ (1982) Iron Maiden’s The Number Of The Beast artwork had originally been prepared for the 7” edition of the group’s Purgatory single, but it’s hard to imagine the image gracing anything but Bruce Dickinson’s first album with the band.
    • KILLERS. This may surprise you, but I have never designed an actual album cover for a real live heavy metal band. I also rarely drive steamboats.
    • LIVE AFTER DEATH. No metal band was flying higher in 1985 than Iron Maiden. By that point, Bruce and his fellow dental floss salesmen were in the midst of a tour that involved an absurd 331 day / 187 show stretch that resulted in one of the finest (if not the finest) live heavy metal albums ever recorded: Live After Death.
    • POWERSLAVE. When it came time to buy my second Iron Maiden album, “2 Minutes to Midnight” and “Aces High” played heavily in my decision, but the striking Egyptian-themed artwork solidified it.
    • “THE TROOPER” SINGLE. Between all the t-shirts, concert backdrops, patches, posters, flags, and likely tattoos (plus the actual single release), the artwork for “The Trooper” is one of the most iconic images in heavy metal history.

    • RUNNING FREE Released: 8th February 1980. Derek Riggs had already painted the punkish ghoul that ended up as Iron Maiden’s debut LP sleeve, but for the first single – his first bespoke piece for the band – he was asked to introduce Eddie in the shadows, holding back the revelation of his hideous features for the album.
    • WOMEN IN UNIFORM Released: 27th October 1980. Again setting the scene in the streetlamp-dappled East End back-alley milieu where all Maiden’s early artwork takes place, this is a sequel to the Sanctuary sleeve where Eddie controversially slew Britain’s new prime minister Margaret Thatcher.
    • TWILIGHT ZONE Released: 2nd March 1981. Frantically painted in a weekend on the wrong drawing board, Riggs wasn’t happy with the result. “That was supposed to be a portrait of a friend of mine called Sylvia,” he reveals on his website, “but because of the other problems it doesn’t look like her and her head’s too small.”
    • PURGATORY Release: 15th June 1981. The artwork originally intended for Purgatory was deemed too striking for a mere seven inch, and re-appeared a year later as the Number Of The Beast album sleeve.
  1. Sep 20, 2022 · NWOBHM legends Iron Maiden released their album Somewhere In Time on this day in 1986. It’s one of their most intricately detailed album covers and layered with many in-jokes and nods to their past.

  2. Toss up between the visual brutal simplicity of Killers and the iconic and memorable design presentation of Powerslave. Special mentions SIT and LAD for their nuances, and of course the surreality of SSOASS and POM. The best part of NPFTD is it’s cover. NOTB is a no brainer, it’s cult status.
