Why is Thacher a good school?
Thacher’s Horse Program is about so much more than learning to ride. Tenacity, self-confidence, humility, patience, and so much more are gained as students face the challenge of a new riding technique or a stubborn horse and take full responsibility for the animal’s care.

Walk on the Thacher campus and you’re bound to encounter a pretty unusual sight: Students saddling horses and heading out for an afternoon ride, dust trailing as they hit the Gymkhana Field or a nearby mountain trail. This is the Horse Program, one of the School’s most unique educational experiences—and one of its oldest traditions.

One truly unique aspect of Thacher is the horse program. Every freshman is required to take care of a horse for an entire year. From mucking stalls to riding through barrels, students learn the art of horseback riding and general care for an animal. Through this process, these students gain experience in leadership and responsibility.
The horse department at Thacher is both unique and outstanding. Unique because the school strives to keep the cowboy culture alive with over 100 horses and a fully outfitted western riding center. It is outstanding because this program teaches students responsibility, cooperation, and ultimately offers a life-long bond between man and beast.
Thacher is an exceptional school because of its academics, its horse program and its environment, but the community stands above everything. If I was able to return to Thacher without the classes and the stress, I would do so in a heartbeat.
