Congregation Emanu-El of New York is the first Reform Jewish congregation in New York City. It has served as a flagship congregation in the Reform branch of Judaism since its founding in 1845. The congregation uses Temple Emanu-El of New York (built in 1928–1930), one of the largest synagogues in the world.
Like so much else in our world, Temple Emanu-El started as an idea, brought to life and realized by a group of young, dedicated individuals. It was 1928. A few Jewish individuals in North Jersey met weekly with Rabbi Max Maccaby of the Jewish Institute of Religion.

Temple Emanu-El began on April 6, 1845. Initially meeting on the second floor of a building at Grand and Clinton Streets, in 1854 the congregation acquired the 12th Street Baptist Church, built in 1847 on East 12th Street.
