Jul 23, 2021 · One of the most prized objects in the Royal Collection is a ‘Second Folio’ edition of Shakespeare’s plays, first published in 1632. The Second Folio contains John Milton’s first appearance in print, his anonymous epitaph to Shakespeare in 16 verses: “What neede my Shakespeare for his honour'd bones.” It appears on the same page as the eight-line “Upon the Effigies.”
The edition expanded the opening set of commendatory poems praising Shakespeare: Shakespeare’s reputation had continued to grow. This section of the Second Folio features an elegy on Shakespeare by aspiring poet John Milton – his first published poem, though his name was not printed.
