Later, he became director of the art academy in Kraków, which was eventually renamed the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts. A number of his students became prominent artists in their own right, including Maurycy Gottlieb, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Mehoffer and Stanisław Wyspiański.
The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna was founded in 1688 as a private academy modelled on the Accademia di San Luca and the Parisien Académie de peinture et de sculpture by the court-painter Peter Strudel, who became the Praefectus Academiae Nostrae.

After studying under the historical painter Hermann Anschutz in Munich (1859)and then briefly and less successfully in Vienna, Matejko returned to Krakow, where he lived for the rest of his life and where, beginning in 1873, he was for many years the principal of the Academy of Fine Arts.
