From obvious choices, like Father Ted, to lesser-known Irish TV shows, like The Hardy Bucks, there’s plenty to get stuck into, as you’ll discover below.

    • Bad Sisters – Apple TV. This series, created by Irish writer and actress Sharon Horgan, is a tour de force of female talent and empowerment. Depicting sisterly solidarity as you’ve never seen it before, the black comedy showcases the acting prowess of some of Ireland’s finest actresses including Ann-Marie Duffy, Sarah Greene, Eva Birthistle and Eve Hewson.
    • Extraordinary – Hulu and Disney Plus. This series stars up-and-coming Cork actress Máiréad Tyers and we absolutely love the premise. Tyers plays Jen, a 25-year-old woman who is the only person without a superpower in a world where everyone else over the age of 18 does.
    • The Clinic – RTÉ Player. Who didn’t love The Clinic? The Irish medical drama debuted on RTE in 2003 and launched the careers of Irish actors like Aidan Turner and Amy Huberman and Victoria Smurfit.
    • Derry Girls – Netflix. Created and written by Lisa McGee, Derry Girls is universally acknowledged as one of the best sitcoms to come out of Ireland in a very long time.
    • KIN. If you're in the market for a crime drama with a difference - look no further. RTÉ's star-studded series KIN revolves around the fluctuating loyalties of the Kinsellas, a small, tight-knit crime family who are embroiled in a gangland war with a much more powerful foe.
    • Normal People. Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald's pitch-perfect adaptation of Sally Rooney's novel Normal People was the great lockdown hit of 2020, and for good reason.
    • Hidden Assets. Crime thriller Hidden Assets, the brainchild of KIN creator and writer Peter McKenna, follows Emer Berry (Angeline Ball), a no-nonsense, shrewd detective in the Irish Criminal Assets Bureau.
    • Smother. The noir thriller Smother was one of the breakout TV drama hits of 2021, a twisty-turny whodunit that kept audiences guessing to the very end. Dervla Kirwan leads the story as Val Ahern, a mother determined to protect her family, and particularly her three daughters Jenny, Anna, and Grace, at any cost.
    • Derry Girls. If you liked Irish star Nicola Coughlan's performance as Penelope Featherington in 'Bridgerton, you're going to love her as Clare Devlin in the 90s Northern Ireland-set comedy series 'Derry Girls'.
    • Hardy Bucks. The comedy style is irreverent and often very bold, but 'Hardy Bucks' is great for a laugh. Following four lads from Mayo in their pursuit of a good time, the show was originally a series of webisodes before becoming a series with four seasons commissioned in 2010, 2011, 2015 and 2018.
    • Can't Cope Won't Cope. One that you might have missed during its initial release is 'Can't Cope, Won't Cope'. Following the coming-of-age stories of two young friends living in Dublin (Seána Kerslake and the late Danika McGuigan), the honest and though-provoking series offers up a glimpse of the kind of struggles young people in Ireland go through as they navigate their twenties.
    • Jack Taylor. There are two characters that Iain Glen will be forever associated with. One is Jorah Mormont on 'Game of Thrones'. The other is Jack Taylor.
  2. TV Series. Each of the episodes is a self-contained story focusing on the weekend of one particular character from a Friday until a Monday morning. Set in a Midlands market town, which remains unnamed, the series weaves in and out of the stories of the various characters over the course of the series.
