  4. The Galway Library Service was established in 1924. In its over 70 years of existence it has a record of progress and success which has become an integral part of the Galway Local Authority Service. The service now has purpose built, full time libraries and sub libraries stretching across the county.

  5. The library service is provided by Galway County Council on behalf of the City Council as a shared service, to which the City Council contributes on an annual basis. While Galway City Council is a Library Authority, it is not directly involved in the provision of the library service for the City.

The 3 libraries in the City are purpose built, full time libraries, which the County Council operates on behalf of the City Council. There are a further 7 full time and 19 part time library facilities throughout the County, including on the Islands.
