But Drowning By Numbers is still definitely a mid-period Greenaway film, firmly oriented around the polestars of sex, death, treachery and cosmic randomness. Where Zed contemplated the process of entropy and slow decay, Drowning interests itself primarily in sudden, violent death.
One of the most sumptuous-looking films ever made, Drowning by Numbers revels in sun-dappled fields, moon-washed forests, and rippling bodies of water. All of the performers rattle off their tricky patter perfectly, and Greenaway loads the films with an encyclopedic collection of games, both literal and psychological.
With its symbolic feminist message set in a modern dank fairy tale, Drowning by Numbers is simply as thought-provoking as it's weird and dark. Drowning by Numbers chronicles how the murder of one man leads to a sinister chain reaction in a visually stunning yet otherwise unconventional small town.
