- Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz) Mirabel is the only child in her extraordinary family who wasn’t blessed with a magical gift. She’s determined to prove that she belongs—denying to everyone, including herself, that she feels all alone… even in her own house.
- Abuela Alma (voice of María Cecilia Botero) Alma is the matriarch of the Madrigal family. Her steadfast determination and unwavering hope led her to the magical Encanto, where she raised triplets Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno.
- Julieta (voice of Angie Cepeda) and Agustín (voice of Wilmer Valderrama) Julieta and Agustín are parents to three daughters: Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel.
- Isabela (voice of Diane Guererro) Mirabel’s sister Isabela is pretty much perfect, with an abundance of grace and poise—not to mention a magical ability to make plants grow and flowers bloom.

If you’re a visual person a family tree might be helpful to kick things off! I based it from Mirabel’s perspective (as the main character), so the descriptions like Tio (uncle) and primo (cousin) are all in relation to Mirabel. I find this useful to keep track of all the Encanto characters.
Gift: non-magical Song: Waiting on a Miracle Relationships:daughter of Julieta and Augustin, granddaughter of Abuela, sister to Luisa and Isabela In my head I have occasionally been referring to Mirabel as a “squib” (if you’re a Harry Potter fan you’ll get the reference). She’s the only person born into the family without magical powers. And it’s i...
Gift: Super Strength Song: Surface Pressure Relationships:Mirabel’s sister (daughter of Julieta, granddaughter of Abuela) Luisa is super strong, so everyone expects her to do everything and fix it all. She quite literally takes everything onto her shoulders. She’s always working for others and never gets to relax… and the pressure is too much. Even...
Gift: Grows flowers Song: What Else Can I Do? Relationships:Mirabel’s sister (daughter of Julieta, granddaughter of Abuela) While Isabela’s power is technically growing flowers everywhere, her gift is basically being perfect, graceful, and beautiful. And there is a massive feeling of expectation and pressure from perfectionism. Isabela has spent he...
Gift: Prophecy Song: We Don’t Talk about Bruno Relationships: Son of Abuela (triplets with Julieta and Pepa) Bruno can see the future – but everyone assumes the worst from what he says, to the point where he chooses to leave the family completely. In many ways it feels like a sort of “shoot the messenger” situation, but I also think it touches on b...
Gift: heals with cooking Relationships: Daughter of Abuela, mother to Mirabel, Luisa, and Isabela, married to Augustin Julieta is a healer thanks to her gift, and we can definitely see how caring she is. Julieta at times feels like the only member of the family who sees past all of the expectations and loves everyone in her family no matter what, e...
Gift: “controls the weather” Song: We Don’t Talk about Bruno Relationships: Daughter of Abuela, mother to Dolores, Camillo, and Antonio, married to Felix Pepa is one of the side Encanto characters that intrigues me the most due to her “gift.” It certainly seems like more of a cruise than a gift. When Mirabel introduces her Tia Pepa in the first son...
Gift: super hearing Relationships: Daughter of Pepa and Felix, sister to Camillo and Antonio Dolores can hear everything. Mirabel describes her as being able to “hear a pin drop” and that she can “hear this whole chorus a mile away.” Have you ever thought about what it would mean to be able to hear pretty much everything? We see it represented in a...
Gift: shape shifting Relationships: Son of Pepa and Felix, grandson of Abuela Camilo is one of the Encanto characters we don’t see too much of, and when we do it’s mostly for comedic relief. He uses his shape-shifting abilities to play pranks on people, or to try and get extra snacks – what teenage boy wouldn’t, right? But he’s also very dedicated ...
Gift: talks to animals Relationships: Son of Pepa and Felix, grandson of Abuela Antonio is kind of the “example” we see in the story, as we watch him go through the process of receiving his gift. That gift turns out to be pretty cool, as he can communicate with animals! We don’t get to see too much of this gift since it’s so new, but already in the...
- Abuela Alma. The Madrigal matriarch, Alma, technically didn't have a power of her own, but without her, no one else would either. Alma was given the magical Encanto to raise her triplets and honor her late husband's sacrifice to give them a better life.
- Pepa. Pepa, one of Alma's three children, was given the ability to control the weather with her emotions. Anytime she felt overwhelmed or upset, a storm cloud would appear above her head, growing and shrinking along with the intensity of her feelings.
- Dolores. Pepa's oldest daughter, Dolores, has the gift of superhuman hearing. Her gift allowed her to be the first to know any kind of gossip in the community, as she was able to hear just about anything - but Dolores' magical ability also proved to be a burden, since she struggled to keep secrets.
- Camilo. Pepa's second child, Camilo, gained the magical gift of being able to shapeshift into different people. His transformations were instantaneous, even changing the clothing to match the new look, and he regularly fooled his family with the trick.
- Mirabel Madrigal. Voiced by Stephanie Beatriz(Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Mirabel Madrigal is 15 years old and lacking one of her family's signature magical gifts, leading her to feel like an outsider within her own brood — but that doesn't mean she doesn't have anything to offer.
- Abuela Alma Madrigal. María Cecilia Botero voices the Madrigal family matriarch (and Mirabel's grandmother), Abuela Alma. She is loving but also quite controlling and protective of her family after losing her husband, Pedro, to marauders who invaded their village, leaving her to raise triplets Bruno, Pepa and Julieta.
- Pedro Madrigal. Seen only in flashbacks, Pedro Madrigal is Abuela Alma's husband. He sacrifices himself to give Alma, their family, and the rest of the villagers time to escape from the pillagers invading.
- Bruno Madrigal. Bruno Madrigal is the exiled Madrigal and Mirabel's uncle. Graced with the gift of precognition, Bruno (voiced by John Leguizamo) can see the future — but when the family and other villagers didn't like what he predicted, he was shunned.

- Abuela Alma & Abuelo Pedro Madrigal. Abuela Alma is the matriarch and undercover antagonist of the family. As the head of Casita, Alma's goal is to make sure the miracle candle continues to burn so that her kids, grandkids, and town are taken care of.
- Julieta & Agustín Madrigal. Julieta Madrigal is Alma and Pedro's daughter. She married Agustín and the couple had three children together — Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel.
- Isabela, Luisa, And Mirabel Madrigal. Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel are Alma's grandchildren and the daughters of Julieta and Agustín. All three women are incredibly different but have one thing in common: their love for their family.
- Pepa & Félix Madrigal. Pepa is Alma's daughter and the sister to Julieta and Bruno. Pepa married Félix and the pair had three kids — Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio.
