Some of the best game graphics today use what's known as ray-tracing - accurate simulations of the way light bounces off surfaces or creates glowing effects around neon signs and so on.
The closest I've seen is technology like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1IcaBn3ej0 Or the hybrid gate program that was shut down a few years ago. Basically it takes real world images and transposes them into a game where the setting is appropriate to make it look photoreal.
