Morocco is a Northern African country, located in the extreme northwest of Africa on the edge of continental Europe. The Strait of Gibraltar separates Spain from Morocco with a 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) span of water.
To get a sense of the topography of Morocco, regions vary from mountainous (in the northern and interior areas) to fertile plains for agriculture (in the coastal areas) to valleys with extreme climates (the farther inland and the closer to the Sahara, the hotter and more extreme it becomes).
Morocco has four mountain ranges: the Rif, the Middle Atlas, the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas. The highest mountain is the Toubkal, which reaches an altitude of 4162 meters. Between the Rif and the Middle Atlas is the Sebu valley.
- OURIKA VALLEY. Best destination in the Atlas Mountains for a short trip from Marrakech. The Ourika Valley lies in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains.
- IMLIL AND MOUNT TOUBKAL. Challenging hikes in the highest peaks of the Atlas Mountains. Imlil is a small village that has become the center for high mountain trekking.
- OUIRGANE VALLEY. Best for visiting traditional Berber villages in the Atlas Mountains. Ouirgane is lower altitude and much warmer than Imlil. The valley floor near the riverbanks is enriched with plums, blackberries, olives, figs, and almond trees.
- CASCADES D’OUZOUD. The most dramatic waterfall in the Atlas Mountains and an easy day trip from Marrakech. The Ouzoud Falls are the most impressive in Morocco and a popular day trip from Marrakech.
