Total hip replacement. A total hip replacement is the most common type of hip replacement. This is where the "ball" of the hip joint (the top end of the thigh bone) and the "socket" (the connected section of hip in your pelvis) are replaced with metal, ceramic or plastic parts.

With daily physiotherapy exercises, you should be able to return to most of your usual activities after 10 to 12 weeks. However, complete recovery for a total hip replacement takes six to 12 months. Your prosthetic hip joint can last for up to 20 years.

The surgery removes the worn and eroded cartilage (arthritis), together with the top of the femur (the “ball” of the ball-and-socket joint), and replaces it with components made of metal/polyethylene/ceramic. These components may or may not be fixed with bone cement (depending on the design used).
