A Soulslike (also spelled Souls-like) is a subgenre of action role-playing games known for high difficulty level and emphasis on environmental storytelling, typically in a dark fantasy setting. It had its origin in Demon's Souls and the Dark Souls trilogy by FromSoftware, the themes and mechanics of which directly inspired several other games.

Often, Soulslike games drop players into an unknown dark fantasy world full of many different large bosses for them to conquer.

Souls-like: “bonfire” checkpoint system that resets world when used and “soul” xp/currency that drops on death, but can be retrieved from body. Rogue-like: Randomly generated map, randomly generated abilities, randomly generated items, and lose everything on death and start over.
A game is "Souls-like" if it relies on memorizing enemy attack patterns with very little room for error (before the Dark Souls titles, the popular equivalent was the modern Ninja Gaiden games).
