Just like that "million to one shot" sequence - the boneheaded logic of the characters makes complete sense while being patently ridiculous. Something I love about Guards! Guards! is how deliberately accessible it is, for people who have never read a Discworld book, or even a fantasy book.

I think the best options are Small Gods (where I started and personally most recommend, excellent standalone in his mature style), Guards! Guards! (probably the most common recommendation, first book of the excellent City Watch series) or Mort (first really great book in the series overall, start of the Death series).
