Optical microscopes are an invaluable tool for scientists as they allow for tissues, cells and larger organelles to be seen and studied. Light is directed through a thin layer of biological material that is supported on a glass slide.
We tag the structures using fluorescent molecules (called fluorochromes or fluorophores). Then, using our fluorescent microscope, we illuminate the sample with light of a particular wavelength, and the fluorophore responds by emitting light at a second known wavelength that we can then detect.
