The World Health Organization (WHO) issued the International Code of Medical Ethics, the first worldwide medical ethical code, in 1949. The code was based on the Declaration of Geneva, which was adopted by the General Assembly of the World Medical Association in 1948 in response to the medical crimes of Nazi Germany.
