What are the elements of style in literature? The elements of style are sentence form, diction, connotation , and punctuation. Some also consider the use of figurative language and clichés as important parts of style.

- Narrative. The narrative mode of poetry seeks to tell a story. Examples are diverse, including everything from Santoka’s oeuvre of first-person haiku to James Tate’s prose poetry to the ancient epics.
- Lyrical. A poem uses the lyrical mode (in the contemporary sense) when the “I” comes to the forefront. There’s also typically an element of musicality: rhyme, meter.
- Persona. Persona poems are spoken or written by a character. The poet does this by occupying the target viewpoint, saying what that character would say.
- Confessional. The confessional mode tries to provide a direct channel for personal experience. Like persona poetry, it’s a type of lyric. Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton form your textbook confessional power duo.

Poets choose words for their meaning and acoustics, arranging them to create a tempo known as the meter. Some poems incorporate rhyme schemes, with two or more lines that end in like-sounding words.
Writers use descriptive style to create a visual, and it usually includes sensory words to evoke a well-rounded picture of what is being described. Rather than state facts about a person or event, this style uses poetic images to get the point across, often using metaphors and similar devices to paint the picture.
Poetry (from the Greek word poiesis, "making") is a form of literary art that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic [1] [2] [3] qualities of language to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, literal or surface-level meanings. Any particular instance of poetry is called a poem and is written by a poet.
