- Table Groups
- O-Shape Or Circle
The main characteristic of the U-shape layout is that the students never face the back of other students and can have a clear view of the class. The desks are arranged in a semi-circle so the teacher can see each student and provide help efficiently to everyone.
This is what we know as the traditional classroom layout, it’s very common to see this setup in most high schools. Rows are particularly good to enhance individual work and for classes that are more teacher-centered. This layout consists of arranging the desks in rows, one behind the other.
Another common classroom layout. This layout is common in elementary and primary schools. Table groups, as the name suggests very well, consist of arranging the students in small tables to form groups.
Unlike previous classroom layouts, the O-shape is an uncommon setup. This layout basically consists of arranging the desks in a closed circle leaving a middle space free.
- Table Groups Layout. The classroom layout with tables which form groups is common in early years and elementary / primary school classrooms. This is also my ideal classroom layout for my approach to teaching.
- Table Rows Layout. Table rows are a traditional classroom layout style designed for teacher-centered instruction. Still common in high schools and exam halls, this format emphasizes individualistic working conditions and maximum teacher control.
- Workstations. Workstations are a very popular classroom layout today. They are closely associated with the ‘open learning spaces’ trend that has taken hold in the past decade.
- Horseshoe Desks. Horseshoe desks are common in university seminars, although are seen in just about any classroom format. The key characteristic of this design is that the students never have their backs to one another and all students have a clear unimpeded view of the central ‘stage’ area of the classroom.
