10 Clyde Mark: Introduction The Gospel according to Mark is considered by most scholars to be the first written of the four Gospels. It is the shortest of the four. Mark describes three scenes that reveal our Lord’s author-ity as the Servant of God. The first scene involves Jesus’ temptation (Mark 1:12–13). Mark does not give as full an account of the temptation as do Matthew (4:1–11) and Luke (4:1–13), but Mark adds some vivid details that the others omit.
“The beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” That’s where we begin. The Gospel of Mark began as a hundred episodes – remembrances of Jesus, some on scraps of paper, strewn across an ancient table, many still carried in oral memory.
One hobby for readers of Mark is to guess at the circumstances of those first readers. The tradition places the book in Rome after the death of Peter, and so written in the aftermath of Nero’s persecutions. Within the book itself, chapter 13 suggests that the imagined audience may have been experiencing persecution.
