Feb 22, 2024 · Aang realizes that the only way he can save the Waterbenders now is to let the Ocean spirit, an elemental being, channel him. However, this isn’t like the past Avatars channeling him. This means completely giving up himself. Once the Ocean spirit takes over, he will no longer be Aang.
When he emerges, (this is completely my interpretation, based on no evidence) he's in the process of unlocking this last chakra and taking control of the avatar state, but he gets shot, the wound somehow locking him out of this state.

Normally, the identity is revealed when the Avatar is 16. But the looming threat of war was upon them. The Air Nomads needed him. Already, the airbender is thrust into a situation no normal 12-year-old would or should be burdened with. Soon, Aang found himself socially ostracized.
