Warning! Full spoilers follow for the Black Mirror Season 5, episode 2, "Smithereens." You can read our spoiler-free Black Mirror Season 5 review here. We also have a list of our top 10 Black Mirror episodes.
The second episode in Black Mirror's mind-bending Season 5 - called "Smithereens" - features a tense conclusion, as Jaden (played by Snowfall's Damson Idris) attempts to take Chris' (Sherlock's Andrew Scott) gun away from him in order to prevent his suicide. After the police sniper takes her shot, we never get to see how it all turned out - is Chris dead? Why is everyone glancing at their phones at the end, and what do we need to know about Billy Bauer?
Thankfully, we spoke to Black Mirror showrunners Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones to explain the ambiguous ending for us. "This was the most important day is Chris’ life, and probably Jaden’s life as well," Brooker explained. "There’s this huge drama for them and everybody in that field. And yet, for the rest of the world, it’s just one more push notification… one more thing to glance at and get on with the rest of their day. Everything is being reduced to the level of a pop-up.”
Smithereens features another prominent character named Billy Bauer (portrayed by Topher Grace), the tech mogul who created the social media site. Billy and Chris have an honest chat about their personal lives, revealing just how similar they are. "I think there’s a nice little parallel in 'Smithereens,'" Jones told IGN. "Billy Bauer is just as out of control as Chris is. Here [Billy] is having just set up this huge tech giant, and he’s not even in control. Because it’s too big, it’s become unwieldy. Everyone feels that they’re powerless in the power that tech brings.”
Jones went on to say that Bauer’s character is inspired by the Silicon Valley ethos "of 'we’re all trying to do good things for the world, we’ve come together in a very spiritual way, and we are going to change the world.'"
David Griffin still watches DuckTales in his pajamas with a cereal bowl in hand. He's also the TV Editor for IGN. Say hi on Twitter.
