Jul 14, 2005 · The first three books work together because they are all trying to figure out who murdered Jon Arryn. AFFC and ADWD have other issues, time and distance just part of it. Try reading the first Cersei chapter in AFFC, then read the first Daenerys chapter in ADWD. Go back and forth, Cersei then Daenerys, just those chapters and you'll see what I mean.

Robert used violence and war to climb. He took the iron throne—he had no good claim to it, he just picked up his warhammer and bashed in skulls until he was on the throne. Tywin uses cruelty, war, and cunning as his ladder. He uses all three together and that’s what makes him so successful.
