Angel City is a 1980 American television film directed by Steve Carver and Philip Leacock. It was originally known as Angel's Gates and was based on the novel Angel City by Patrick Smith. [1] Filming took place in June 1980 at the migrant camp in Homestead Florida where Smith had worked himself.
This TV movie takes the audience down to Florida to the not quite angelic Angel City, a horrific Work Camp run by Mitchell Ryan who basically treats the migrant workers as slaves, locking them in at night and charging them for every little thing including unwanted bottles of cheap wine.
Synopsis by Hal Erickson. Angel City plays like a Grapes of Wrath updated to the 1980s. Ralph Waite plays a West Virginia farmer who, faced with the prospect of starving to death on his unproductive land, packs up his family and moves to the so-called Promised Land of Florida.
