    First flight departs

    All 19 men destined to hijack the four commercial planes had successfully passed through airport security and were set to fly. American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767 carrying 81 passengers - including five hijackers - departs from Boston bound for Los Angeles, California.

    Final contact

    Attempts by air traffic control to contact flight 11 are not acknowledged, and the 9/11 Commission Report states its belief that the hijacking began at this time or shortly after. Two flight attendants are stabbed - possibly to access their keys to the cockpit - as is an ex-military passenger. One of the hijackers, trained as a pilot, makes his way to the cockpit.     Flight attendant Betty Ong contacts the American Airlines office in North Carolina via an airphone to report the emergency. For 25 minutes, Ong recounts what has happened:

    Flight 77 takes off

    American Airlines Flight 77, a Boeing 757 with 64 people on board including five hijackers, leaves Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia for Los Angeles.

    FAA hears Flight 11 hijacked

    Federal Aviation Administration command centre is alerted that Flight 11 has been hijacked and is believed to be heading towards New York. An FAA controller has heard a transmission from one of the hijackers saying "Nobody move. Everything will be okay. If you try to make any moves, you'll endanger yourself and the aeroplane. Just stay quiet."

    Military hears Flight 11 hijacked

    The US military is alerted to the hijacking of Flight 11 for the first time. Two F-15s are ordered to be ready at a military base 246 kilometres away from New York. Though they take to the air, they are never given intelligence on which to act.

    Flight 93 takes off

    United Airlines Flight 93, a Boeing 757 with 44 people on board including four hijackers, takes off from Newark International Airport bound for San Francisco. About the same time, hijackers strike on Flight 175, using knives, tear gas and the threat of a bomb. Both pilots are killed and at least one other crew member is stabbed.

    Phone call from Flight 11

    In a phone conversation with American Flight Services Office in Boston, a flight attendant on American Flight 11, Madeline 'Amy' Sweeney, reports erratic flying:

    Flight 11 hits North Tower

    Flight 11 crashes into the North Tower of the World Trade Centre, between floors 93 and 99. Everyone on board the plane is killed. Hundreds of people in the tower are killed instantly, while hundreds more are trapped. All three of the building's stairwells are thought to have become impassable from the 92nd floor up.

    South Tower workers told to stay put

    An announcement is made over the PA system in the South Tower saying an incident has occurred in the other tower. People are told their building is safe and they should remain in or return to their offices.
