Sadly Thomas Andrew died in 1929 and so Tom was brought up by Annie and her two sisters. After leaving school at the age of 14 Tom’s mother helped him to find work at Templeton Carpet Factory. Although he started as an office boy, Tom was quick to progress to apprentice designer.
Tom Shanks RSW RGI PAI. 1921 - 2020. Born in Glasgow. He was a conscientious objector in WWII and worked in forestry for the duration of the war. Afterwards went to Glasgow School of Art and graduated in 1950. RSW 1957, RGI 1983 and PAI 1996.
