    The Netflix anime series is based on the real-life story of Yasuke, a black samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga in Japan. He was widely regarded as the first-ever foreigner to be given warrior status in Japan.

    The show combines historical elements with fantastical components and references moments documented in Yasuke's life. There are giant robots, magical beasts and otherworldly fight sequences involving supernatural powers but also scenes inspired by events recorded about his life.

    One of the first scenes shows their first meeting where after winning a fight on the street, he was brought before Nobunaga who didn't believe that his skin color was black and ordered him scrubbed but it remained intact.

    When Yasuke arrived in Japan 1579 he was with an Italian Jesuit named Alessandro Valignano most likely as a bodyguard for Valignano who wasn't allowed to have any soldiers or guards as a priest.
