After all, what was the friendship between Chifuyu and Baji even like in the current timeline? I mean, Baji might not have had to repeat a grade (Shin's death and Kazutora's imprisonment weren't there to distract him).

Though I have to say there's something this spin-off is good at: It shows that Baji and Chifuyu were not equals. Kazutora and Baji were equals, but Baji and Chifuyu were not on the same page. And in the end of the day, Chifuyu was happy if he was useful to Baji, in any case.
