Aang has yet to master water-bending and earth-bending so he needs to learn those first before facing Fire Lord Ozai for an ultimate clash.
In the first episode of book 3, when they're stowed away on the ship, Katara is trying to work on Aangs wound, and it brings back memories of the fight and clues him in on what happened. She literally says, "I can feel a lot of energy twisted up right there," and when she goes to manipulate that, it causes another flashback.
Aang continues to chase him as Ozai looks back, realizing Aang is catching up. Aang moves his arm in a circular motion causing water to wrap itself around Ozai's leg and up to his outstretched arm, whipping him around, before slamming him on top of a pillar.
