King Haakon VII is unpleasantly surprised on April 8 to be told by his son, Crown Prince Olav, that the Germans are invading, based on reports of Nazi ships heading their way. On April 9 all doubt is removed as German troops begin landing in the country, while a German cruiser is sunk in Drobak Sound.
The King, the Crown Prince, and the Cabinet eventually escape to Britain, where they remain until the end of the war. In May 1945, following the German surrender, Haakon is reunited with his grandson, Prince Harald, in London before the royal family returns to Norway.
In April 1940, a fleet of German ships slips through Norwegian defences and issues an ultimatum: surrender or perish. Denmark had only recently capitulated to Germany but Norway's King Haakon VII (Jesper Christiansen) had no intention of following its example.
What will be the king’s choice? The Nazis for their part will not be denied, a bloodbath ensured for Norway if it does not surrender. How then can the impasse be broken if the king should remain resolute and defiant in his opposition? The answer: Nazi installation of a Norwegian puppet to fill the political vacuum made by the crisis.
