Dec 12, 2015 · Back in 1974, The Stanley closed for the winter, and King (along with his wife, Tabitha), just happened to find their way there on the last opening night prior to the winter shut down. They were the only guests in the hotel that night, and were given what was the best room in the house – Room 217.
He wasn’t content with the rustic, laid-back life of the Estes Park area and decided to turn it into a resort town. In 1909, construction began on the Hotel Stanley. The hotel was a forty-eight-room grand hotel that catered to the moderately wealthy social circle of friends back east.
In June 1911, during a power outage, a chambermaid named Mrs. Wilson entered room 217 to light a candle. A gas leak caused the room to explode! What's amazing is that she lived, and was given a job at the hotel for life. Maynard says that she is known to appear from time to time and even put away clothes for guests. Nice ghosty.
