- Notting Hill Carnival has its roots in 1950s and 1960s civil rights activism and is one of the biggest cultural events for British Afro-Caribbeans and British Indo-Caribbeans. It was established in the mid-60s on the back of the first "Caribbean Carnival" held at St Pancras Town Hall in 1959, organised by black community leader Claudia Jones.
