A totem is used to farm crops or minerals. Each totem has a hitbox of 1x3x1 and can be purchased from Arius in the Hub using coins.
Totems can store items; once its storage has reached maximum, the totem will not collect any more items until the player empties it out. When placed next to a conveyor, the totem will automatically drop its items onto it to be carried away to an industrial machine. When a totem comes within 10 blocks of a totem disabler, its productivity will be disabled.
Crop totems collect and replant crops in a 3-block radius, but do not award any extra possible seeds. A crop totem has 6 slots, each able to hold one crop each. Once it has been filled, the player will need to empty it out. At Level 1, a crop totem will take 30 seconds to harvest one crop. If a conveyor is nearby, it will take another 30 seconds to drop it onto the conveyor. If a tomato, potato, carrot, or onion is dispensed to a conveyor, it becomes an oily crop, which needs to be washed in a washing station or an industrial washing station before it can be used or sold.
Cacti, chili peppers, rice, seaweed, raspberries, candy cane, and void parasites each don't have a totem.
Mineral totems will spawn ore rocks of the respective mineral that have the same properties and chance of spawning rare drops (e.g. crystallized iron) as naturally-spawning ore rocks on other islands. The test totem was a developer item used to test totems and had been duped in large quantities. It used to produce faster than iron totems and have a higher chance to drop crystallized iron, but their stats are both equal now. It is only obtainable by trading.
Prior to November 1, 2020, if a player held the Test Totem out, its model would be invisible. If dropped, it would be gone forever, but its hitbox would still exist on mobile.
Every totem, besides the test totem, red berry bush totem, blueberry bush totem, and blackberry bush totem, can be upgraded. Upgrading totems costs coins and specific materials. To upgrade a totem, select the upgrade button under the storage UI, and a tab will appear like the one in the picture. There are 3 types of upgrades: Quality, Utility, and Efficiency. The stats are shown on the left side of the totem's upgrade menu. With every 20 levels a totem gains and at final level, a change in appearance will occur.
Breaking an upgraded totem will return all resources spent on upgrades.
•Crop totems need the player to plant their respective crop seed nearby to start working as totems that have not harvested before cannot plant seeds.
•Crops harvested by totems will give Farming XP despite how no particles are emitted when this occurs.
•Red berry, blueberry, blackberry, and test totems are the only totems that cannot be upgraded.
•Totems were also remodelled on April 16, 2021, but if a player holds a totem, it would display its legacy model.
•This was later fixed in May 8, 2021.
