Sonata is from the Italian sonare, to sound or to play. Basic sonata form consists of an exposition, development, and recapitulation. Do not confuse sonata form with the sonata genre, a 3 or 4 mvmt piece for 1 or 2 performers.

The Sonata. , it simply means ‘instrumental piece’. It is the epitome of instrumental music, and is certainly the oldest and most enduring form of ‘pure’ and independent instrumental composition, beginning.
In relation to classical music, sonata means the piece is performed by an instrument typically a piano or another instrument accompanied by a piano – rather than being something that is performed vocally (the term ' cantata ' is used to describe a piece that is sung).
We consider sonata form as a way of composing, one that is the outgrowth of a large-scale musical process that is dependent on a powerful yet simple tonal strategy: State the opening material in the tonic. State additional material in a contrasting key. Restate all of the material in tonic.

Sonata form is the most important large structure of individual movements from the “common-practice” tonal era. It sets forth and resolves its musical discourse within a large-scale binary format.
Exposition. The Primary Theme, or Group, in the tonic key opens the Exposition. Usually at a restatement of the Primary Theme, we enter a transition which takes us from the primary key to the secondary key -- usually the dominant (major keys) or the relative major (minor keys.)
