Jul 8, 2024 · Driver location signs are small and blue. They’re placed 500 metres apart along motorways and major A roads. Usually, they feature a distinct code or number that matches a specific location on the road. Sometimes they’re called distance marker posts, UK highway signs or motorway sign posts.

- Signs giving orders. Signs with red circles are mostly prohibitive. Plates below signs qualify their message. Signs with blue circles but no red border mostly give positive instruction.
- Warning signs. Mostly triangular. The priority through route is indicated by the broader line. Gradients may be shown as a ratio i.e. 20% = 1:5.
- Direction signs. Mostly rectangular. Signs on motorways - blue backgrounds. Signs on primary routes - green backgrounds. Blue panels indicate that the motorway starts at the junction ahead.
- Information signs. All rectangular. Lane designated for use by high occupancy vehicles (HOV) - see rule 142.
Jan 31, 2024 · Junction give way lines. A double broken white line tells you you’re about to meet a major road, and that the drivers on that road have priority over you. You must therefore give way, which means to slow down and assess the situation before committing to pulling out.
When you see a rectangular blue sign with a large white arrow and small red arrow pointing in opposite directions, it means you have priority over vehicles travelling from the other way. Drivers are often confused by this as it’s not always clear who has right of way.
