Dec 16, 2021 · Inshallah, mashallah or alhamdulillah. Here is an overview of the most common Islamic expressions in Arabic, their meaning and correct use.
- Salam. Originating in Arabic, the word salam is one of the most widely used greetings across the Middle East and Islamic world, and is found as a loanword in languages as diverse as Turkish, Persian and Malay.
- Inshallah. US President Joe Biden made headlines for his sarcastic use of inshallah in a debate with Donald Trump in the run-up to the 2020 US presidential election.
- Wallah/ wallahi. The expressions wallah or wallahi are most commonly heard in heated conversations as assertions of honesty and exclamations of the truth of something seemingly improbable.
- Mashallah. The expression mashallah means "it is what God willed" and is used to congratulate someone on their good fortune, and to protect others against the "evil eye".
- Walk on the Earth with humility and dignity. وَ عِبَادُ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الَّذِیۡنَ یَمۡشُوۡنَ عَلَی الۡاَرۡضِ ھَوۡنًا. ‘And the servants of the Gracious God are those who walk on the earth in a dignified manner.’
- When the ignorant address you, say, ‘Peace!’ وَّ اِذَا خَاطَبَہُمُ الۡجٰہِلُوۡنَ قَالُوۡا سَلٰمًا. ‘And when the ignorant address them, they say, “Peace!”’
- Spend the night prostrating before your Lord. وَ الَّذِیۡنَ یَبِیۡتُوۡنَ لِرَبِّہِمۡ سُجَّدًا وَّ قِیَامًا. ‘And who spend the night before their Lord, prostrate and standing.’
- Pray that Hellfire does not touch you. وَ الَّذِیۡنَ یَقُوۡلُوۡنَ رَبَّنَا اصۡرِفۡ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَہَنَّمَ ٭ۖ اِنَّ عَذَابَہَا کَانَ غَرَامًا اِنَّہَا سَآءَتۡ مُسۡتَقَرًّا وَّ مُقَامًا.
