- When you’re logged into Steam and haven’t been doing anything for two hours, Steam automatically assigns a snooze status to you. By inactive, we mean doing absolutely nothing, even moving your mouse. The moment you move your mouse, your status will go back to the online status.

Jul 6, 2016 · As far as I've found, Steam automatically sets the following status : Away : Person is logged in but has not been using Steam for 10-15 minutes. Snooze : Person is logged in but has not been using Steam for 2 hours. Online : Person is using the Steam client right now.
Assuming Valve hasn't changed the system, this means your friend has Steam open on another computer that is sitting idle. The snooze status also only shows in the four friend squares in the Steam overlay, or in the old mobile app. For the 'new' Steam chat, "snooze" only shows as "away".
Online - The user is actively using Steam. Snooze - The active PC is currently sleeping, or in a screen saver. Extended 'away'; at least 1 hour of inactivity. Reverts to "Online" when something happens. Away - The active PC hasn't had any activity for some time; basically, "AFK" after 5 minutes. Can also manually be marked.
