- This idea of adding and taking away from the word of God comes from the end of the book of Revelation: “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city” (Rev. 22:18–19).

- Faith. When the Bible talks about faith, it can be referring to a set of doctrinal understandings (“the faith”) or to a trusting belief that God exists, is faithful to His Word and has expectations of us.
- Virtue. Complementing this foundation of faith, spiritually mature Christians will also have virtue. Other translations render this as “moral character” (International Standard Version), “worthiness” (Young’s Literal Translation) and “goodness” (New International Version).
- Knowledge. The knowledge we are to have is that of Jesus Christ and what pleases Him (2 Peter 1:3). Of course, we must also have knowledge of “every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).
- Self-control. This word is translated “temperance” in the King James Version of the Bible. It refers to mastery over evil inclinations and desires.

Jul 24, 2024 · So, to “not go beyond what is written” means to focus on Jesus and His Word above all else. It means to trust that the Bible has all the answers and truths we need to live a holy and pleasing life before God—we don’t need anything beyond what God has provided for us in His Word (see 2 Peter 1:3).
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’
