The two main ways of escaping the feeling of absurdity are suicide and hope. Suicide concludes that if life is meaningless then it is not worth living. Hope denies that life is meaningless by means of blind faith. Camus is interested in finding a third alternative.
The most common way of “eluding” the absurd, says Camus, is through “hope”—hope that something better is on the way in the future. Camus sees mankind as fundamentally confused about life, making the issue of its absurdity the prime concern above all others.
