  2. Dec 29, 2015 · The characters in “Anomalisaunsettle. Their plight makes you think about 21st century loneliness, despair and alienation— subjects that would be unpalatable if Kaufman didn’t write his characters so compassionately and with such dry humor.

  3. Again this is intended. That's the question then: how are we any different from these puppets? What makes us human? I think really the character of Lisa is Kaufman's answer. He isn't going to explain it to us; he will do one better and give us a character who essentially exemplifies what it means to be human in this world.

  4. Jan 2, 2016 · So to answer anyone's question to why Anomalisa is so amazing, it's because it is a very complex psychological film that ponders the unsettling mind of Michael and the ultimate tragedy of his struggles, but also a testament to human connection.

I think Anomalisa is, weirdly enough, a celebration of normality as well as a satire of the sort of indie film where two "outsiders" are magically saved from dealing with other people by meeting each other. Despite his view of "everyone else" as being vacuous, it's Michael who seems to be truly empty.
