3 days ago · A visual field test can help diagnose scotomas, or blind spots. It can also help identify loss of peripheral or side vision. Loss of side vision is an indicator of glaucoma, a disease that can lead to blindness. This article describes what to expect during a visual field test, why it's done, and what the results mean.
A visual field test is a simple test which measures your peripheral vision and all-around vision. The visual field machine will complete an analysis of the responses given during the test and collate these results in a visual plot field. Why do I need a visual field test?
The point where your optic nerves converge to exit the eye and into the brain is known as the optic disc. This area of the eye has no light-sensitive cells to detect light rays. This results in a break in the visual field known as your “blind spot.” When the cross mark disappears, you instead “see” a continuous white field.

A normal visual field extends approximately 100° temporally (laterally), 60° nasally, 60° superiorly, and 70° inferiorly [2]. A physiologic scotoma (a blind spot) exists at 15° temporally where the optic nerve leaves the eye. Definitive location varies slightly on an individual basis.
