May 13, 2010 · Also called Cabbagehair, Gordiacea, Gordiid, and Gordian Worm, the horsehair worm is a parasite that lives inside crickets, cockroaches, grasshoppers, beetles, and other anthropod pests. These odd threadlike or hair-like creatures can grow up to 3.2 feet (one meter) and only 0.03 inches (3 millimeters) in diameter.
Hair worms are long and thin—2 to 118 inches (5 to 300 centimeters) long and 0.02 to 0.4 inch (0.5 to 10 millimeters) wide. They are black, brown, yellow, white, or gray. The front end of most of these worms has a white tip with a thin dark band behind it. Some hair worms have raised bumps on their surface.
The larvae mature into adult worms under the skin or in lymph tissues. The adult worms produce offspring called microfilariae, which circulate in the bloodstream or reside in the skin. The infection is spread when the infected person is bitten by a fly or mosquito, which ingests the microfilariae.
