  1. May 1, 2023 · South Shields in the 21st century is an inviting resort town, an amusement park for youngsters, a chain of seaside parks and lots of history. Arbeia for instance is the easternmost fort on Hadrian’s wall and the supply centre for that entire Roman defence system. Let’s explore the best things to do in South Shields: 1.

  2. These rankings are informed by Tripadvisor data—we consider traveller reviews, ratings, number of page views, and user location. 1. South and North Marine Parks. 536. Parks. Lush green spaces with a lake for pedal boating, miniature steam train rides, and well-maintained play areas.

    • Souter Lighthouse. Who else had no idea South Shields was home to the world’s first electric lighthouse? Built in 1871, Souter Lighthouse is a South Shields must-see, and it’s easy to combine with a coastal walk to see the amazing rock formations (which I write about below) as well.
    • Incredible rock formations. I still cannot get over the impressive Magnesian limestone rock formations in South Shields. The coastline is dominated by towering cliffs of abandoned quarries, limestone arches, hidden caves, and huge rocks looming out to sea before finally levelling into a white sandy beach.
    • Marsden Beach and Grotto. Marsden Beach is a gem with dramatic cliffs juxtaposed against a pretty stretch of white sand. You won’t miss spotting Marsden Grotto while you’re at the beach, one of the most unique places to visit in South Shields.
    • Sandhaven Beach. With such a gorgeous coastline, there are endless free things to do in South Shields, and a visit to Sandhaven Beach has to be one of the best.
    • Ocean Beach Pleasure Beach. We love visiting Ocean Beach Pleasure Beach - there seems to be a really good mix of fairground rides for little ones and thrillseekers alike.
    • Laser Force & Amusements. You will find Laser Force inside of Quaser Amusements at Ocean Beach Pleasure Park. It is SO much fun and I would definitely recommend for the whole family (ages 6+).
    • Dunes Adventure Island. The Dunes is joined onto Ocean Beach Pleasure Park and the place to be if you are looking for good value (and something indoors).
    • The Word. The Word is the National Centre for the Written Word and completely free to visit. Located by the ferry port next to the Customs House, it is a nice indoor place to spend 30 minutes - 1 hour with kids.
  3. Parks, beaches, fairground rides, live entertainment, art, stunning scenery and seriously good food - South Shields has it all. History buffs will want to start at the historic Roman fort (and UNESCO World Heritage Site) of Arbeia where regular events and re-enactments bring the town’s Roman history to life.
