The movie’s Strauss knows that Oppenheimer’s pride and arrogance mean he will challenge the lifting of his security clearance, bringing about his own downfall. Essentially, Oppenheimer was living on borrowed time in the belly of the national security state.
So basically Strauss who was traumatised by the Great Depression, which apparently put the brakes on his academic education, was hurt by Oppenheimer's real and perceived elitism , thereby poisoning their relationship. If Oppenheimer had flattered him, he would have a powerful boss as an ally basically for free.
