May 24, 2023 · Neshama is the physical breath of life that distinguishes between a dead soul (“nephesh moth” – Lev 21:11) and a living soul (“nephesh khaya” – Gen 2:7). Explanation. According to the Scripture, anything that breathes is a living soul and anything that breathed earlier is a dead soul.
At Gen 2:7 nephesh is used as description of man. Job 12:7–10 parallels the words רוח (ruah) and נפׁש (nephesh): “In His hand is the life (nephesh) of every living thing and the spirit (ruah) of every human being.”.
Living things grow by making new parts and materials and changing old ones. This happens when a seed grows into a plant or a chick matures into a hen. As human beings grow, they add new structures, such as teeth, and change the proportions of others.
