Chester William Nimitz (/ ˈnɪmɪts /; February 24, 1885 – February 20, 1966) was a fleet admiral in the United States Navy. He played a major role in the naval history of World War II as Commander in Chief, US Pacific Fleet, and Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas, commanding Allied air, land, and sea forces during World War II.

In December 1944, Nimitz was promoted to the new, five-star rank of Fleet Admiral. The two atomic attacks on Japan in August 1945 forced them to admit defeat. Just weeks later, on September 2, aboard the battleship USS Missouri anchored in Tokyo Bay, Fleet Admiral Nimitz signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on behalf of the United States.
