  1. All three enemies exert their powerful influence in order to bring us down to defeat. 1. The Outer Enemythe World. The Scriptures instruct us to “Love not the world” (1 John 2:15) and they remind us that to be a friend of the world is to be an “enemy of God” (James 4:4).

    • The World. The Greek word used is kosmos and the root meaning is “order” or “arrangement,” hence beauty (cf. cosmetics and the cosmos flower). The main meaning of kosmos is the organized system that is under the devil’s control and leaves out God and Christ.
    • The Flesh. The literal meaning of flesh is found in expressions like “flesh and blood” and “flesh and bones.” Christianity does not teach that the human body is evil, but that it can be used for evil.
    • The Devil. Devil (diabolos) is simply an anglicized form of the Greek word that suggests hurling (slander) back and forth. The devil is a personal enemy who opposes God and His plans and tempts His people.
    • Human Nature. Sometimes, our greatest enemy is not from without, but from within. We are our own greatest enemy that can lead us away from God.
    • The World. The world’s social order, with all its deceitful lusts and pleasures, is another great enemy that we should overcome. Let’s read I John 2:15-17.
    • Satan. This list won’t be complete without including Satan. He has been a “MURDERER from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him.

    • Discouragement. The pull of discouragement can come from many sources—comparison, a lack of fruit, spiritual setbacks in those you’ve discipled, backsliding in your own walk with the Lord, or simply a difficult season.
    • Doubt. Satan’s fiery darts of doubt are loaded with many types of poison. Sometimes it is doubt as to if you were called into ministry in the first place or if God is using you to make a difference.
    • Division. To me, the enemy of division is one of the most grievous because we, in the flesh, do it to one another. No wonder God hates it. These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him…he that soweth discord among brethren.—
