Amebiasis is infection primarily due to Entamoeba histolytica. It is acquired by fecal-oral transmission and can be sexually transmitted by oral-anal contact. Infection is commonly asymptomatic, but symptoms ranging from mild diarrhea to severe dysentery may occur. Extraintestinal infections include liver and rarely brain abscesses.
